David Power, Boston's Head of HPC - The Latest YouTube Sensation!

Posted on 19 July, 2013

Dan Olds from Gabriel Consulting interviewed Boston's Head of HPC, David Power, at ISC '13 last month to discuss our sponsorship of the University of Edinburgh EPCC team at the ISC'13 Student Cluster Challenge. Dan was keen to learn more about how David and the Boston HPC team helped with selecting appropriate technology and hosted the EPCC team for a three-day experimentation and testing workshop. The effort paid off, with the team achieving 2nd in the LINPACK benchmark (8.321 TFlop/s), finishing as the fastest European cluster overall.

David also hinted towards future Student Cluster Challenges being tackled with ARM-based clusters, and gave Dan a tour of the Boston Viridis microserver. When combined with GPU acceleration, ARM based hardware has the potential to deliver immense performance at dramatically reduced power consumption over traditional clusters. Exciting stuff to look forward to for future Student Cluster Challenges.

The video has found its way onto The Register and as of writing has already achieved over 100 views. A little way to go until Gangnam Style levels, but we're sure it won't be long until David achieves intergalactic internet fame!
