The Boston D-Store series utilises Storage Spaces Direct, coined S2D from Microsoft to deliver a true scale out storage platform. A platform that can deliver both high performance capacity and provides options for hyper convergence.

Microsoft's S2D provides node to node fault tolerance through selectable data mirroring or parity policies. In the 4-node starter configuration, if a single node fails or requires maintenance, then it's applications and data are seamlessly serviced by the remaining nodes. It is possible to maintain even higher availability too, depending on the total number of servers in the cluster, node fault tolerance can be set to allow for more than one failure at a time and maintain availability of services.

High end performance is delivered using all-flash or hybrid architectures that cache and tier data to enable optimum utilisation of each commodity. Data transfer and replication is also via a low latency internode network using RDMA 10Gbit/s Ethernet adaptors from industry leader Mellanox. This scalable network means that the platform can be scaled out to up to 16 servers and over 400 drives in one storage cluster.

Moreover, S2D can be configured as either a converged (pure storage) or hyper-converged (storage and virtualisation) appliance. As a result, the Igloo 1216-W10S can be configured to be a converged solution that layers scale-out file server atop of S2D to provide networkattached storage over SMB3 file shares. Alternatively, it can be both storage and virtualisation host with full Hyper-V cluster functionality allowing both compute and storage scale linearly by adding more of homogeneous systems as building blocks.

The building block itself is based on Supermicro's Twin Squared, a 2U, 4 node rack mount platforms, saving rack space whilst maximising on performance. Each node houses 6 hot swap SATA drive bays, 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors and up to 2TB of DDR-4 Registered ECC 2400MHz memory.  Supermicro's IPMI (out of band management) and two titanium certified redundant power supplies are also included as standard.

The solution is available paired with both 1GbE and 10GbE Supermicro or Mellanox switch gear to complete the solution for green site deployments, however can also be paired with existing switches with RDMA support.
