Supermicro Optimised for Intel Ruler Form Factor SSD's

Posted on 24 May, 2018

Supermicro optimises new storage servers as Intel responds to new challenges facing datacentres with the new ‘Ruler’ form factor SSD.

Original form factors were not designed to keep up with the needs of increasing data centres. The new Intel® SSD DC P4500, resembling a 12-inch ruler, has been designed to require up to 55% less airflow than a traditional 2.5-inch U.2 SSD. Impressively, it supports cloud storage, software-defined infrastructure, provides higher scaling capacity per SSD and delivers increased storage density (TB/rack unit) due to its shape.

Supermicro’s new 1U NVMe systems are thermally optimized high-density, high-performance all-flash storage solutions built to take advantage of this new “ruler” form factor. Optimised for storage density, these systems support front hot-swap accessibility to 32 “ruler” drives for up to 256TB of fast low-latency NVMe storage in 1U. However, they also support standard U.2 SSD to offer greater storage flexibility.

“Our new all-flash 32 hot-swap ‘Ruler’ drives in a high-density 1U system design is the latest example of how Supermicro continues to lead the way for NVMe technology,” said Charles Liang, President and CEO of Supermicro. “With more than triple the all-flash storage density of previous 1U solutions, this Supermicro system will take us to Petabyte scale in a single 1U system in the near future. This new JBOF supports flexible configurations with up to twelve hosts or head nodes and extremely high data transfer throughput up to 64GB per second.”

The “ruler” form factor is a great, purpose-built SSD answer to customer and data centre needs with high per-drive, per-server, and per-rack capacity. Click here to view the full Supermicro storage product range.
