Intel Open Computex with a Focus on their New Fifth Generation Core Processors

Posted on 02 June, 2015

As Computex Taipei kicked off in Taiwan this week, Intel set the tone for their year ahead boasting the implications of improved processing power in their new CPU ranges, Broadwell and Intel® Xeon® D. Promising better graphics, media and video performance, the new range of processors is set to boost the Intel Core range.

Intel's E3-1200 V4 range is compatible with the current Denlow platform (LGA 1150 pin to pin compatible) and will be supported on most current E3-1200 V3 series systems as a drop in replacement. The main improvements in this refresh include:

  • A die shrink from 22nm seen in the V3 generation to 14nm
  • Improved power efficiency as well as increased GPU performance
  • Intel Iris Pro graphics P6300 which has shared L3 cache and decided 128MB graphic embedded cache

New platforms which utilise this new GPU feature set and allow increased support for graphics intensive workloads will be emerging over the coming months. Supermicro's new MicroBlade servers (MBI-6118D-T2H, MBI-6118D-T4H) support the new Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1200 v4 product family with Intel® Iris™ Pro graphics P6300. These new systems are optimized for running graphics rich applications from any remote device as well as applications in a variety of fields; Virtual Hosted Desktops, Cloud Gaming, Workstation in the Cloud, Video Search Indexing, and Automated Ad Insertion, are but a few examples.

Intel's Xeon-D range is a brand new SoC architecture which set its sights on the low power SoC market that is currently held by Intel`s ATOM range and ARM based systems. Xeon-D is a 64bit SOC optimized for low power requirements with the following highlights:

  • TDP of up to 45W
  • DDR4 Support up to 2133Mhz
  • Up to 8 Broadwell Xeon core (14nm die size)
  • Up to 3.4x performance increase over Atom C2750
  • Up to 128GB Memory capacity, 4xE3/atom family
  • 2x Integrated Intel 10GbE
  • PCI-E 3.0 Support

Two Xeon-D SKUs are available today - the D-1540 (8 cores) and D-1520 (4 cores). If you would like to make use of our lab facilities in order to test this brand new technology, systems are available for remote testing today. Contact our Lab team to book a slot!
